TKI Urban Waterbuffer research satisfactorily concluded

Subsurface water storage renders urban areas climate-proof

A three-year research project on the so-called Urban Waterbuffer (UWB) – a circular water system – was recently concluded with satisfaction. The UWB makes possible the subsurface storage of water in urban areas. The concept was thoroughly tested in a few field trials within the TKI Urban Waterbuffer project. A wide consortium of knowledge institutes, engineering consultancies, contractors, suppliers and end-users collaborated in the development of a digital guide. This offers practical handles to tackle and solve the flooding and drought challenges in an integrated manner.

The five steps in an Urban Waterbuffer are the: 1) Harvest, 2) Retention, 3) Treatment, 4) Storage and 5) Use of rainwater
