Stefan Kools PhD

Stefan Kools works at KWR as a researcher and team leader. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the water sector, both as a scientific researcher and ecotoxicology advisor. He is fully acquainted with the European legislation, such as the EU Water Framework Directive and the Drinking Water Directive. Thanks to his knowledge of substances and their effects on humans and animals, he is able to solve various monitoring issues. Stefan enjoys working on emerging contaminants such as microplastics, and on new monitoring methods like bioassays, sensors and citizen science. In the national context, he works for the drinking water utilities as a member of the Water Quality Advisory Committee and Vewin’s Sources and Quality Steering Group. Internationally, he supports RIWA in the IAWR, plays an active role in the NORMAN network, and is a member of the International Water Association (IWA) and of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC). Besides his research activities, Stefan also leads the Chemical Water Quality and Health team, paying special attention to project collaboration, a multidisciplinary approach and personal development.
